Sgrafitto Ring

When researching frames at the national portrait gallery, I became drawn to the ornate Italian sgraffito frames. The gold decoration contrasts beautifully with the black, and I wanted to reinterpret this within my work.

These rings have been acid etched to create a delicate acanthus pattern on the surface, which is then been decorated with 24ct gold foil through the process of Keum Boo.  I then carefully remove the top surface of the gold and oxidise, revealing the pattern underneath.
